“Fighting back tears, I had to close my eyes to listen to you sing the music of Phyllis Hyman. Many of your tonalities are hauntingly similar and bring back memories of times I sat listening to her during performances. Phyllis would be very proud to hear you perform her music.”
— Shirley Hyman (Phyllis Hyman's Aunt)

Bio / Press Release
With her characteristically rich and dynamic vocal abilities, Mary Cross consistently delivers show stopping performances across the United States. The NJ-born and raised singer-songwriter takes audiences on a journey, as she masterfully executes renditions of contemporary and old-school Jazz and Classic R&B. Once described as being “the total package”, she has a reputation for her spellbinding stage presence that builds deep intimacy with the crowd.
Influenced by, and often compared to the likes of the late great Phyllis Hyman, Mary borrows elements from those she grew up listening to -- namely Nina Simone, Burt Bacharach, Gladys Knight, Whitney Houston and many more. As far as contemporaries go, she also is inspired by India Arie, H.E.R., Sevyn Streeter, Isley Brothers, Sara Barielles, and Gregory Porter to name but a few. Many of these artists listed are featured within her set rotations, of which are performed in varying formats -- everything from classical R&B affairs, to acoustic guitar accompaniments, quartets and even full jazz outfits.
Mary Cross has received notable media from Phillycam’s The Other Tony Bennett television show, and radio stations WPPM 106.5 FM, with hosts Sherry Lee Patterson, Dr. Alicia Bullock (Alicia’s Peace), and Tracey B. Jones as well as WFLR 91.7FM by host Tim Shanahan, Stockton University. They all are featuring her debut single in regular rotation.
Mary is highly sought after for both private and community events, and is frequently booked out at hotels, weddings, theatres, fashion and talent shows, healthcare institutions, fundraisers and more. She has opened for Eban Brown, former voice of the Stylistics, Chris Thomas (The Mayor) Comedy Showcase, ‘Luther Relives’ William Smooth Wardlaw and more.
Her DEBUT Single entitled, ‘In Love, There’s A Risk’ was released Nov 1, 2019 and is streaming on all major platforms. The single was written and produced by Philadelphias' own Grammy-nominated producer Donald Robinson (Nancy Wilson, Phyllis Hyman, Vanessa L. Williams).
